There are many worlds in the universe we know. There are many universes in the whole of existance, each with many worlds of their own. Putting it simply, there are almost endless worlds in existence. This story, however, is about one world only. One world out of billions of other worlds. This world, however, is different from any of those other billions. For each of those billions of other worlds, there is a separate (yet closely linked) digital world. The inhabitants of these digital worlds are not beings in the sense we know of. They are digital beings- life forms made out of data that are programmed to simulate physical beings. There is as much variation of digital life in these worlds as there is variation in the 'real worlds' they are linked to. Most of the billions of worlds are not aware of the existence of these digital worlds, and so they have no name for these digital beings. This one world, however, is an exception.

This world has no separate digital world. Instead, it is its own digital world. They are one and the same. The beings of this world are aware of the digital beings that they share a world with. Some of the people in this world even have relationships with them. Some people, by some random, and unknown means, share a close link with a single digital being. They are partners. Some people have endless fun with their digital partners, some people put their digital partners against those of other people in battles. The people of this world affectionately bestowed a name upon these digital beings. They named them, quite simply, Digimon, digital monsters. This story is about a single group of 6 humans and their Digimon, and how, through no choice of their own, they saved their world, known as the Earth, from total destruction.
